Senior representative teams

Somerset seniors cricket provides the opportunity for those who, while progressing in years, have lost none of their enthusiasm for the game. We have two over-50s teams, three over-60s teams, and one over-70s team . The 1st teams of both the 50s & 60s have often reached the latter stages of their national inter-county competitions.

Somerset Over 50s

There are three Somerset over-50s teams, all competing in national competitions and always welcoming new players.

There are three Somerset over 60 teams, all competing in national competitions along with a friendly side.  They are always looking to welcome new players.

Somerset Over 70s

Somerset over-70s provides the opportunity for those who may have progressed through other ‘senior sides’ or who are looking to re-engage with cricket in their ‘advanced’ years.

2023 – 2024

On the pitch, Somerset Seniors ended their season with the 60s 2nd XI contesting their third national final in three years but this time, regretfully, we well beaten by a strong Worcestershire side.  Also, thanks to the generosity of Somerset CC and the SCF we had a club day which started with a charity walk around Taunton which raised money for the Bob Willis Fund which supports research in prostate cancer and ended watching SCCC play Kent in the final County Championship home game of the season.

Somerset Seniors are now preparing for their season, which will see all four over 60/70 sides represent the county in their County Championship competitions.  The season starts with the 60s First XI playing Wiltshire on 23rd May, with 2nds and 3rds starting a week later with Friendlies against Hampshire and Cornwall respectively while the 70s start with Worcestershire on the 2nd of May.

We are still in the process of arranging some pre-season friendlies but indoor nets are about to start, with a 2 hour session on Wednesday 7th February 2024, 14:00 – 16:00 at The Coopers Associates County Ground, Taunton, TA1 1JT.  This is then followed by hourly sessions (17:00 – 18:00) starting on Friday 16th February until 19th April and three hour sessions at Weston super Mare CC, Devonshire Road, W-s-M, BS23 4NY, 10:00 until 13:00 from 13th March 2024 through to the 27th March 2024.

If you are 59 or over and thinking about how to extend you playing career then you should consider playing for the SSCA.  With the opportunity to play on top quality grounds, with ACO umpires and scorers and with and against like minded players, representing the County has been described as the cherry on top of a long playing career.  We cater for players of all abilities and also have a Friendly side with a large fixture list.  Please come along to any net session or if you want to discuss things first please contact Edwin Morris on 07954 163745.

More about seniors cricket

Continuing to play cricket at a reasonable standard is not only enjoyable and fulfilling, it provides the opportunity to maintain valued friendships with colleagues as well as opponents alongside whom we have progressed through the age groups. And, of course, there is the added value in having regular exercise – even if some of the knocks and strains can take a little longer to repair these days!

Our seniors team benefit greatly from the generosity of clubs around Somerset who make their facilities available to host matches, preparing good wickets and delivering a high standard of catering.

By running more than just one side at each age level, we are able to offer games to a broad range of playing abilities and we have seen how even the most seasoned player can develop and improve given the opportunity to keep playing regularly.

How to get involved

We are always pleased to hear from those who may be wondering about the future of their involvement in cricket and warmly welcome those who might consider continuing to participate in the game and to defer ‘hanging up their boots’ for a while longer. If you are interested in playing or just finding out more, please contact one of the seniors team management group:
