Womens

The Senior’s Women team is a new development and has become quickly established as a popular offering by the SSCA. Matches are generally played on a Thursday and are over two 35 over innings. 2026 saw the inauguration of a competition played between local counties culminating in a cup final: a competition which should grow as other counties develop the provision.

Qualification to play for Somerset is based players being at least 40 years of age and having permanent residency, being born in the county or residing in a county which does not have a Women’s side.

Late in 2024, with valuable backing from Somerset Men’s Seniors, recruitment began for Somerset Women Cricketers aged 40 and over. Five training evenings in Taunton, supported by the Somerset Cricket Foundation and senior men, helped establish the squad, which quickly grew to 26 players. In summer 2025 the new group played its first fixtures, beginning with a 30-over inaugural match away to Gloucestershire in early July. Although Somerset lost, the day was a major milestone, bringing together players who had never previously played as a team and building confidence, partnerships and friendships. A return match at Weston-super-Mare later in July was badly affected by rain, with Somerset chasing a revised target under DLS but again falling short. Two further friendlies were lost to the weather, yet the group remains full of momentum. A four-county league is planned for 2026, and a tour to Oslo is also being explored.
