SCF Minor Cup 2023

Chard CC 2nd XI vs Chilcompton Sports

The Game

The Coopers Associates County Ground hosted the Minor Cup on Sunday 3rd September, and saw two teams who had never stepped foot on the County Ground before play a well matched final.

Chilcompton Sports won the toss and elected to bat first despite some heavy overnight rain which left the outfield damp.  Hancock put in an early claim on the player of the match accolade as he and Captain Futcher put on 69 for the first wicket, with Hancock scoring at a run a ball before being dismissed for 43.  Futcher completed the anchor role well as Deverill came in and picked up where Hancock left off, pushing the ball around and converting singles into twos and threes.

His 15 ball cameo was ended by Draper with the score on 120, and one wicket lead to two as Fussell was adjudged lbw shortly after.  This allowed Futcher to come to the fore and with support from Purchase upped the run rate further, benefitting from the drying outfield.  Chilcompton closed their innings on 169/4, an above par score compared to recent Minor Cup finals.

The Chilcompton opening bowlers put the pressure on Chard from the outset of the reply, but Brun soon found himself upping the run rate and turning the tables on Chilcompton.  Good support from Clancy, Cleal, Sochon and Best started to turn the game in Chard’s favour, but three wickets falling in the space of 10 runs made the game Chilcompton’s for the taking.

Despite a last ditch attempt from Shazad and Riley Chard fell agonisingly short by 15 runs, and Chilcompton Sports emerged victors of a competitive final.

Player of the Match

Chilcopmton Sports captain Ben Futcher was presented with the player of the match award for carrying his bat in a well paced innings.
