U16 Somerset Smash 2023

Bridgwater CC vs Taunton St Andrews CC

The Game

Friday 1st September saw the U16 Somerset Smash final debut at the Coopers Associates County Ground.

Bridgwater CC faced Taunton St Andrews in a low scoring but thrilling final, which saw the more experienced Saints come out on top by 6 wickets. Saints won the toss and elected to bowl first, expecting to use the drying conditions to their advantage, which proved correct as Gribble edged behind on just the second ball of the day.

Ford dug in before chipping one straight back to Matravers, and Bridgwater knew they were up against a strong opening bowling attack who were getting a lot of movement on the ball. O’Farrell and Frampton managed to cultivate a more watchful partnership in the middle order, but the damage was already done, and a couple of run outs compounded Bridgwater’s pain as they were bowled out for 47. Matravers was the pick of the Saints bowlers, taking 3 wickets for just 3 runs from 11 balls.

In reply, Saints shot out of the blocks thanks to Thomas Rew’s big hitting 20 from 11 balls. Bridgwater started to put the pressure on Saints, and some good work behind the stumps from Gribble accounted for Bennett and Jones, however some lose overs added to the extras and took Saints over the line 4 wickets down after just 37 balls.

Player of the Match

Player of the match was awarded to the Saints James Matravers for his commanding bowling display.
