That’s why there’s a learning pathway to help you develop at your own pace and umpire at the standard of cricket you aspire to umpire at, whether that be club cricket, ECB Premier League Cricket, or even the National Pathway.

Umpire courses available

The ECB Umpiring Course is delivered by ECB Umpire Tutors and the CPDs courses are delivered face to face by a team of experienced SACO Umpire Tutors who umpire in WEPL and SCL . Funding may be available for prospective candidates for all of our umpiring courses from:

ECB Umpiring Course 2024

This course is designed to give new umpires the key skills, knowledge and confidence to stand as an umpire in cricket. No prior experience of umpiring in cricket is required before attending the course.

Whether you plan to support Junior Softball cricket through to adult cricket, this course will cover the following topics:

  •  Understanding the role of the umpire
  • Gain a basic understanding of umpiring the game
  • Answering appeals and the common methods of dismissal
  • How to communicate effectively with all stakeholders in the game
  • Judging whether or not it is safe to play

The course is split into classroom and practical learning, so we recommend learners to come dressed appropriately.

Learners will be asked to complete some e-learning prior to attending the course, which will take no more than 90 minutes to complete in total. Pre-learning can be completed via multiple visits or in one go.

Learners must be 14 years of age at the time of the course.

Cost £70.00

Post course, learners will have the confidence and competence to go and umpire at appropriate levels within recreational cricket.

ECB Umpire CPD Learning

There will also be CPD modules which new umpires can use to upskill, and more experienced umpires can use as a refresher.  These will be face to face modules lasting 60-90 minutes.

It’s Your Call – Umpire Education Stage Three

This course is designed for experienced umpires who aspire to stand at the highest level of league cricket and is available to all members who have attended the stage one and stage two courses. As well as the interpretation and application of the Laws of Cricket, it also covers the management of the match, the field and the players on it. Man management and other practical aspects are also covered.

This course is also suitable for you if you are not aspiring to Premier League cricket, but still want to develop your skills and be the best umpire you can be.
