A whopping 183,040 yards will be covered by four South Petherton Cricket Club players as they attempt to complete this year’s London Marathon and raise some money for the Lord Taverners.

Typically towards the end of April around 35,000 people will flock to the capital to take part in the London Marathon. It’s one of the biggest races of its kind in the world. Millions of us will gather round our TV sets to watch the superhuman athletes, the local running club heroes and those crazy, wonderful people who run (and limp, hop and hobble) in ever more outrageous costumes.  However, we find ourselves in different times with the London Marathon now taking place on the 4th October, virtually!

This has been great news for four cricketers from South Petherton Cricket Club who have taken on the challenge to walk the virtual London Marathon this year.  Ian Luckins, Damian Brooks, Paul Acreman and Tom Ashley-Maguire will be walking the London Marathon to raise money for The Lord’s Taverners.

The Lord’s Taverners works hard to provide opportunities for disabled and disadvantaged children to take part in sport and recreational programmes . In Somerset, the Lord Taverners funds the very successful Super 1 Programme.  As mad keen cricketers, the four South Petherton all rounders (in a cricketing sense) understand the benefits of being involved in sport, not only from a physical activity perspective, but also the huge social and mental health wellbeing that team sports provide. For young people in particular, the values of teamwork, discipline and respect are invaluable and should be made available to all.  The South Petherton Cricket Club lads feel very strongly that the Lord Taverners fantastic work deserves all the support it can get, and if they can help by raising some funds and awareness, then some pain, sweat and tears will be worth it!
