Inspire and develop players

The ECB Support Coach programme is the assistant coach provision for cricket coaching in England and Wales. This programme is part of a strategic response to needing more support (assistant) coaches on the ground able to inspire and develop players. The programme makes becoming a coach much more accessible in terms of time commitment and cost. The course is designed to make taking your first steps onto the coaching pathway fun, interesting and engaging and enables candidates to make a real difference to their club and community. ECB Support Coach replaces the previous Coach Support Worker provision.

Programme descriptor

This programme has been designed to give learners the knowledge, skills and confidence to support qualified coaches and enhance player experience. An ECB Support Coach is not qualified to lead coaching sessions independently and therefore must be supervised by a qualified cricket coach.

Programme structure

The programme consists of three modules in total. Two e-learning modules are integrated with one face-to-face module. Each e-learning module takes around 15 minutes to complete with the face to face module running for 3 hours.

  • Module 2 – Supporting coaching – face to face module
  • Module 3 – Being an ECB Support Coach – e-learning module

Face-to-face module

There is a single face-to-face module that runs for three hours and includes:

  • Role of an ECB Support Coach
  • What does support coaching look like?
  • Coaching – your turn
  • Player welfare and safeguarding
  • Coaching fielding, bowling and batting – your turn ECB Coach Developer guidance notes will provide further detail behind the outcomes and activities in each module.

Pre-requisites for certification:

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 16 years of age on the start date of the course.
  • Complete the online Safeguarding Young Cricketers module
    Safeguarding Young Cricketers is issued separately by ECB e-learning and is complimented by tasks completed during the face-to-face module.
  • Complete the online MCQ Assessment
    Learners are assessed by an online multiple choice question paper found in module 3.
  • Current (within 3 years) ECB DBS check

A bursary can be awarded to learners that register on ECB Support Coach, ECB Foundation Coach or ECB Core Coach programmes between 1st February 2023 and 31st January 2024.
